How many times has this tragedy played out this winter, one of the worse the country has seen in many years?

Four people, a mother and her three children, died of carbon monoxide poisoning last week in Toledo, Ohio.

They were living in a rented house with no heat or electricity, and were using a gas-powered generator to run a space heater, according to published reports.

The deceased were Tamara McDonald, 39; Damien Reyes, 18; Domonique Reyes, 16; and Taralynn Wood, 10. Their bodies were discovered Wednesday on the first floor of their house on Hamilton Street.

The family’s pet dog was also killed by the poisonous carbon monoxide gas.

This scene has happened again and again this winter. Lesson to be learned: Do not used gas-powered generators inside a home to heat it.

Carbon monoxide poisoning took the lives of two cousins, one who had been celebrating his birthday, and two pit bulls in South Milwaukee this weekend, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Authorities ruled the deaths of Juan Vasquez, who turned 29 on Saturday, and his cousin Noe Ramirez-Abriz, 28, as accidental. Their cousin had lent them his car to go to a dance in Milwaukee to celebrate Vasquez’s birthday.

The bodies of the two men were discovered in that vehicle by the wife of the cousin that the men both lived with, Sebastian Corona Ambriz. His wife Silvia Corona woke up 2 a.m. Sunday to take care of her baby, and she noticed that the home’s garage door was ajar and that the light was on.

She went back to sleep, assuming that Vasquez and Ramirez-Abriz had returned from the dance and were inside the home.

But later Sunday morning when it was discoverd that the pair weren’t in the house, the wife went back to the garage and saw that its door was closed.

She found the two men’s bodies in the front seat of the car, with the family’s two pit bulls in the back seat, also dead.

Four Family Members In Wisconsin Are Treated For Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Four family members, one found semi-conscious,  were hospitalized in Neenah, Wis., Tuesday for carbon monoxide poisoning. One of the family’s cats was killed by the lethal gas.

The victims were exposed to the potentially lethal carbon monoxide gas in their home in the 200 block of Grant Street. The four, whose identities weren’t immediately known, were transported to Theda Clark Medical Center.

Three of the group displayed symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, while a woman, 36, was found semi-conscious.

The home didn’t have a working carbon monoxide detector, although the family had bought one but hadn’t installed it yet, according to local authorities.

That is in apparent violation of a Wisconsin law that took effect Feb. 1 and mandates that carbon monoxide detectors be installed in one- and two-family homes.

One of the family’s pet cats was killed due to carbon monoxide poisoning, while two other cats were taken to a Neenah veterinary hospital.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the high levels of carbon monoxide found in the home.

Carbon monoxide levels ranging from 800 to 2,000 parts per million were detected in the home by firefighters. Federal CO standards say that levels of up to 50 ppm are safe in the workplace.
