James and Cora  Elizabeth Letsinger, both 90 years old, were discovered dead in their home on Tuesday.

The couple attended an event on Sunday night and when they came home, they were likely tired and forgot to turn their car off, according to coroner Brian Gainey, who knew the Letsingers. The door of their garage was closed, and the car was running.

According to a press report, the coroner said that James Letsinger had poor hearing, and probably did not realize that he had left his car running.

About 800 workers at a cosmetics building in New Jersey were evacuated Thursday due to high levels of carbon monoxide.

  http://www.myfoxny.com/dpp/news/local_news/new_jersey/carbon-monoxide-evacuation-in-holmdel-20101015-apx

Initially five employees at Cosmetics Essence in Holmdel went out of the building sick, and they went to a local First Aid station.

That prompted firefighters to go to the building and see if there were any problems, and they found that the carbon monoxide level was high.

Three workers were transported to a local hospital as a safety precaution.

Work was being done on the building’s roof, but authorities are still investigating what caused the carbon monoxide to reach such dangerour levels.

Don’t Mistake Carbon Monoxide Poisoning For The Flu: Buy Detectors

This is why you need carbon monoxide detectors.

Five family members, one incapacitated by carbon monoxide poisoning, were rescued from their home in Sidney Township, Mich., Thursday by local sheriff’s officers.

 http://www.sentinel-standard.com/newsnow/x829118347/Carbon-monoxide-poisoning-in-Montcalm-County

Firefighters and paramedics arrived at the home and treated Blake Hollenbeck, 45, who was incapacitated by the fumes. He had been discovered by his daughter Mercedes, who woke up to find all her family members feeling ill.

Hollenbeck’s wife and two other daughters — Shirley, Hailey and Hannah –  left the house without any assistance, but the ill family members were taken to Sheridan Hospital. The five received treatment for carbon monoxide poisoning.

The Hollenbecks are lucky they are alive. They told authorities that they had been suffering from flu-like symptoms for the past two days. It wasn’t the flu. Fire officials said carbon monoxide has escaped into the home from a leak in an exhaust pipe that had disconnected from a furnace.

The Hollenbecks didn’t have any carbon monoxide detectors in their home. I hope they install some now.

Minneapolis Condo Building Evacuated After Carbon Monoxide Leak

About 100 people were rousted from a large Minneapolis condominium building Monday night after a carbon monoxide scare. Better safe than sorry, despite the inconvenience, as far as this attorney is concerned.

 http://www.startribune.com/local/104338633.html?elr=KArksi8cyaiUg7Kk8P3iUiD3aPc:_Yyc:aU7DYaGEP7vDEh7P:DiUs#

Firefighters at 11:30 p.m. Monday night responded to Minnehaha Place, located at Minnehaha Avenue S. and 53rd Street, after a carbon monoxide detector went off in the building.

Roughly 100 residents of the condo were ordered to vacate the premises while authorities investigated. They found that a power washer in the building’s underground garage was emitting exhaust, as well as some carbon monoxide fumes.

A similar incident took place a year ago.

Although some carbon monoxide was released, it did not reach dangerous levels, according to authorities.

The condo residents were permitted to go back to their units at 2:50 a.m. after being advised to air out their places.

Four Men Discovered Dead In Van From Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

This is the most deadly carbon monoxide case I’ve heard of recently.

Four men were found dead Tuesday morning in a van outside Wichita, Kan., apparent victims of carbon monoxide poisoning.

http://www.kansas.com/2010/10/05/1527852/four-men-found-dead-at-santa-fe.html

The four victims were discovered at Santa Fe Lake in their 15-passenger van by a park attendant, according to The Wichita Eagle. At first the attendant thought that the men, who have been staying off and on at the lake, were sleeping.

It’s believed these men made the same fatal mistake as many other victims of carbon monoxide poisoning: They had a gas heater on to keep warm during the cold night. Noxious fumes from that heater did them in.

The Wichita Eagle reported that the four victims may have been doing roofing or pipeline work in the area.

California Truckers Sue Over Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

A California couple, long-distance truckers who allege they suffered carbon monoxide poisoning, are suing five companies that they blame their illness on.

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700070937/California-couple-files-suit-in-carbon-monoxide-poisoning.html

M. Jeffrey Barger and Martha Cervantes allege negligence, claiming that four Salt Lake City and one Colorado company failed to properly fix the rig they were driving. They filed suit in the 3rd District Court in Salt Lake City with Barger claiming he sustained brain damage.

After receiving training in February 2009 from the CR England Training Program, Barger was driving a leased 2007 Freightliner truck, according to the Deseret News.

That truck had issues with its exhaust system, and the repairs were supposed to have been performed by Horizon Truck Sales and Leasing, according to the suit. Two other companies also supposdly made repairs on the truck, Trans-West and Smith Detroit Diesel/Allision.

But according to the suit, on June 29, 2009 Barger was on his way to a pick-up when he felt sick and he had to go to the hospital. As it turns out, over a period of several months Barger had been exposed to carbon monoxide that was being emitted inside the truck.

Barger was exposed to so much carbon monoxide that it caused “severe and irreversible injuries, including, but not limited to, permanent brain damage,” according to the suit, the Deseret News reported Monday.

Cervantes also claims that she had carbon monoxide poisoning, and that this has hindered her ability to work.

The lawsuit seeks economic and non-economic damages, costs, attorney fees and interest.

A 25-year-old soldier and a woman died of carbon monoxide poisoning last Sunday at his duplex in Manhattan, Kan., according to the Army Times.

Specialist Jamie Elliott of Columbia, Md., a solider at Fort Riley, and Lashawn Michael Veal, a 22-year-old civilian, were killed Sunday by the dangerous gas.

Another soldier, Corporal Maria Hightower, 22, of Chicago was rescued from the duplex. She was alive but unresponsive, and remains hospitalized at the Stormont Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka, Kan.

The carbon monoxide that killed was emitted by a car that was left running in a garage attached to the duplex.

Elliott and Hightower were part of Company G, 299th Brigade Support. They moved to Kansas a year ago after spending a year in Iraq.

Carbon Monoxide Threat Still Plagues Rupert Murdoch’s New York TV Station

The carbon monoxide problems involving media baron Rupert Murdoch’s TV station in New York City, WNYW, are far from over, according to the New York Daily News.

On Tuesday a correspondent for WNYW, Antwan Lewis, and a photographer were sent to the hospital with suspected carbon monoxide poisoning after working in a remote truck. In recent weeks several WNYW employees have been taken ill while working in those trucks, which are heated with gas-fueled generators that emit carbon monoxide, a potentially fatal gas.

http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/tv/2010/09/29/2010-09-29_monoxide_alert_again_hits_ch_5.html

In the incident earlier this week, Lewis and the photographer were in a truck owned by WNYW’s sister station, WWOR, when its carbon monoxide alarm went off.

Now the general manager of both TV stations, Lew Leone, told the News that he has brought in consultants to find a remedy to the carbon monoxide threat in the 14 trucks owned by WNYW and WWOR.

At first, WNYW had its trucks’ gas generators retrofitted with longer exhaust pipes, but now the truck generators will be replaced by new devices, which take three to four days to install.

Unions representing WNYW employees are on the case now, as well. They informed employees that the carbon monoxide problem is “dangerous” and needs to be addressed immediately.
