Two people died of apparent carbon monoxide poisoning last Saturday afternoon in their condominium in the city of Milton, Wis., the Rock County Sheriff’s Department reported. http://www.jsonline.com/news/wisconsin/92024159.html

Joan Leith, 66, and James Folk, 68, were found by their relatives, a press release from the sheriff’s department said.

And seven other residents of the condo complex were treated for carbon monoxide poisoning at the scene.

Authorities suspect that the two victims were killed by fatal fumes from their car, which was left running in its garage until the battery died. Police said they believed the car’s engine had been left running in the garage since Friday night.

The sheriff’s press release didn’t say whether the car was left with its engine on purposely, or by accident. Foul play isn’t suspected.

The condo building was evacuated Saturday afternoon as the Milton Fire Department and Alliant Energy looked for a gas leak, But they found none.

A Virgin Blue plane was diverted to Adelaide, Australia, when its crew detected a noxious odor and some passengers began to fell sick. http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/04/19/2876903.htm?section=justin

One female passenger was taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital in stable condition. As many as eight passengers felt sick from the fumes.

Initial reports were that the toxic fume was carbon monoxide, but Virgin Blue officials later denied that. They do not know what the odor was, or where it came from.

The flight had been going from Perth to Sydney when it was diverted after the odor was detected.

Two Carbon Monoxide Victims In Arizona Were Rodeo Cowboys

Two teenagers found dead of apparent carbon monoxide poisoning in their pickup truck in Scottsdale, Ariz., had just participated in a Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association competition. http://www.rapidcityjournal.com/news/article_d9f11e12-473b-11df-8b87-001cc4c03286.html

Mike Hillman and Jesse Andrus, both 18-year-old high school seniors from Roswell, N.M., had traveled to Arizona last weekend to compete in the Fiesta Days Rodeo in Cave Creek, Ariz. Hillman won the saddle bronc riding competition, his first win ever in a PRCA rodeo. It was the first PRCA rodeo that Andrus competed in.

Hillman and Andrus had been scheduled to return home to New Mexico on Monday. When they didn’t show up, their parents reported them missing.

Scottsdale police found both young men dead in the camper shell of their truck, which was parked in a Safeway parking lot. Police suspect that the youths had a generator running at night, and that it emitted carbon monoxide fumes that killed the pair.

Goddard High School in Roswell, which Hillman and Andrus attended, has brought in a crisis intervention team to help students cope with the deaths.

California On Way To Mandating Carbon Monoxide Monitors in Homes

California has a bill pending that would require state residents to install carbon monoxide monitors if their homes have a fireplace or attached garage. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gA1wnqxm7Hk-yyzkCTvMjYCQ1SLQD9F1P6D81

On Monday the state Assembly passed the bill sponsored by Democratic Sen. Allen Lowenthal of Long Beach in a 47-19 vote. The bill will go to the Senate next for action.

The bill requires installation of carbon monoxide alarms in homes with not only fireplaces and attached garages, but also in places that are heated by oil.

Proponents of the bill argue that the monitors, which cost about $20, will detect the deadly gas and save lives. From 30 to 40 deaths are caused by carbon monoxide poisoning each year, according to estimates.

But last year Gov. Arnold Schwartzenegger nixed a similar bill, claiming that the California building commission should be able to vet carbon monoxide standards of such legislation, according to the the Associated Press.

Two teenagers from Roswell, N.M., died inside the camper shell of a pickup truck in Scottsdale, Ariz., of carbon monoxide poisoning, according to The Arizona Republic.  http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2010/04/12/20100412two-bodies-found-in-scottsdale-camper-truck.html

The two victims, Jesse Andrus and Michael Hillman, both 18, had traveled to Carefree, Ariz., for a rodeo last weekend.

They were both found Monday in their truck. Scottsdale police believe that the youths had been running a generator in the rear of their vehicle to keep warm.

The teens’ parents in Roswell had expected them back home on Sunday, and they apparently contacted Scottsdale police Monday morning when the youths didn’t return.

Using a telephone GPS, police located the teens’ truck, which was parked in a shopping-center lot near Scottsdale Road and Pinnacle Peak Road. Authorities forced their way into the camper shell, and found Andrus and Hillman dead.

Times Square Explosion and Carbon Monoxide Threat Prompt Evacuation of Four Buildings

Four buildings near Manhattan’s Times Square were evacuated Tuesday after an underground buildup of carbon monoxide sparked an underground fire, which blew manhole covers off and sent flames shooting through them to the street. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/07/nyregion/07manhole.html

The explosion took place at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday right by the Novotel Hotel at 220 West 52nd St. The hotel and three other buildings were evacuated, and West 52nd Street was closed from Broadway to Eighth Avenue.

No one was hurt in the explosion, which New York Fire Department officials said happened when power cables under the street caught fire, with carbon monoxide and smoke then building up.

One witness, Vincent Massarelli, told the New York Daily News, “There were seven-foot flames in the street.” http://www.nydailynews.com/news/2010/04/06/2010-04-06_underground_fire_on_w_52nd_st_makes_asphalt_explode_four_buildings_evacuated_no_.html

Authorities evacuated the four buildings because dangerous levels of carbon monoxide were detected in the lower levels of those structures.

Carbon monoxide levels reached as high as 700 parts per million, while a house CO alarm would go off at only 35 parts per million, a fire department official told the News.

The explosion took place not far from the Ed Sullivan Theater on Broadway, where David Letterman does his late-night show.

A 41-year-old Florida woman, who apparently was using a generator for heat because she couldn’t pay her electric bill, died from carbon monoxide poisoning Thursday. http://www.wesh.com/news/23033192/detail.html

When paramedics responded to the home on Kingswood Drive in Orange County, it had high levels of carbon dioxide. The victim had been overcome by the noxious fumes, and was dead after she was taken out of the house.

The woman’s daughter, who called for help, was hospitalized.

The victim’s name wasn’t released, but neighbors said she had only moved into her home a few weeks ago, and that she had just purchased the generator.
